Oriental medicine, or “OM”, is comprised of five main modalities: acupuncture (including needling, cupping, guasha, and moxabustion), herbal medicine, nutrition guidelines, Asian bodywork such as tuina and shiatsu, and internal martial arts such as tai chi and qi gong. While some practitioners in the U.S. are trained at schools focusing just on the manual therapies of OM, other programs also include training and competency in Chinese herbal preparations as part of the curriculum. Alison’s alma mater was a comprehensive program focusing on Traditional Chinese Medicine, or “TCM”, including all five of the modalities aforementioned.
