17 Ways to Maximize the Benefits of Acupuncture [Infographic]

Do you know how to get the most out of your acupuncture session? Today we’ll talk about how to prepare for your treatment, what to do during your treatment, and what to do (and not do) after your treatment so you can maximize the benefits of acupuncture.

Also, be sure to check out our infographic at the end of the post!

Before Your Session

Having an understanding of what you need to do before your session can help you feel more relaxed and get more out of your acupuncture treatment.

Your First Session

If this is going to be your first session, make sure you talk to your acupuncturist about any medications you’re on and any other treatments you’re undergoing. Fill out any forms your acupuncturist gives you as completely and truthfully as possible.

Clothing

Be sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing to your treatment. Your acupuncturist may need to roll up your sleeves or your pant legs, so be mindful of wearing clothing that can be easily moved if needed.

Avoid Going to Your Session Hungry

Make sure you eat a snack or a light meal an hour or two before your acupuncture treatment. It can be difficult to relax when your stomach is rumbling and all you can think about is what you’re going to eat afterwards. However, avoid eating a heavy or greasy meal before your treatment. You don’t want to show up to your session bloated or with an upset stomach.

Don’t Rush

Try to get to your appointment at least fifteen minutes early. Not only does this mean you’ll be able to receive your full acupuncture session, but it also gives you time to start relaxing before your treatment. Showing up to your session stressed out will only impede the benefits of acupuncture. Take a few minutes to practice some deep breathing and allow your body to start shifting into a relaxed state.

Avoid Brushing or Scraping Your Tongue

It sounds like a weird thing to do before an appointment, but acupuncturists often check your tongue for color, texture, and coating. This can give them an insight into your overall health. The tongue can actually be a great indicator of imbalance in your body. So avoid brushing or scraping your tongue before your appointment to give your practitioner a more accurate picture of your health.

Avoid Coffee, Alcohol, and Sugar

It’s recommended that you avoid caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and any recreational drugs before and after your appointment.

Stay Hydrated

Be sure to drink plenty of water before and after your acupuncture session. Staying hydrated will help your body flush out any toxins it needs to get rid of.

Turn Off Your Phone

By turning off your phone, you’ll have an easier time being present in the moment and allowing yourself to feel more relaxed without any distractions or interruptions. Your acupuncturist will also be grateful for the lack of interruptions.

During Your Session

While your acupuncturist will be doing most of the work during your treatment, there are a few things you can do to help maximize the benefits of your acupuncture appointment.

Relax

The best thing you can do during your acupuncture session is to relax. This is a time for healing, and being relaxed will only help the healing process. Consider this part of your “me time” and allow yourself to disconnect from any stressors or worries you have. If you meditate, this is the perfect time to practice some meditation.

Breathe

Practicing mindful breathing can not only help you relax, but it can also help you be more aware of your body and the positive effects of your acupuncture treatment. Focus on your breathing and allow yourself to breathe deeply and slowly while you receive acupuncture.

Ask Questions

If you’re nervous or you’re having trouble relaxing, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Tell your acupuncturist what you’re feeling and experiencing. Did your acupuncturist forget to put on calming music? Ask them to turn it on. Are you experiencing any discomfort? Let your acupuncturist know. If there’s anything preventing you from feeling relaxed, talk to your acupuncturist. They’ll most likely be able to talk you through it and give you tips on how to relax.

After Your Session

Give Your Acupuncturist Feedback

Do you feel wonderful? Relaxed? Happy? Let your acupuncturist know! Tell your acupuncturist any sensations you felt or emotions you experienced during your treatment. This will help them understand what you need for your next appointment.

Book Your Next Appointment

Before you leave your acupuncturist’s office, be sure to book your next appointment. Many people receive acupuncture treatments weekly, but you should talk to your practitioner to see what would work best for you.

Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol

Just like how you should avoid caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and recreational drugs before your treatment, you should avoid them for at least 2 hours after your treatment as well. Acupuncture is a healing art and you could undo any benefits from it if you start filling your body with unhealthy products after your session.

Stay Hydrated

Your body is most likely going to be trying to detox after your acupuncture appointment, so be sure to help it out by drinking plenty of water.

Keep Yourself Warm

Acupuncture helps improve the flow of qi and blood in your body and cold can actually impede that flow. After your appointment, try to avoid swimming or taking cold showers. Drinking warm or hot beverages can help you stay warm inside and out. If you regularly ice a part of your body to combat swelling, wait a couple of hours after your appointment to apply ice. Chances are, the acupuncture has already helped reduce the swelling, especially if you’ve already had previous acupuncture treatments.

Stay As Relaxed As Possible

If you’re tired and can take a nap, do it! Try to block out some time after your appointment for you to stay in your relaxed state for as long as possible. This will help maximize the benefits of your acupuncture treatment by keeping your qi moving through your body. Avoid strenuous exercise or stressful situations immediately after your appointment.
